This paper describes the coil pack for the 20.4 MWh Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage Engineering Test Model (SMES/ETM) system giving details of the conductor, conductor support, coil pack support, instrumentation, quench initiation system, electrical insulation and thermal isolation. Design requirements for installed, operating and fault conditions together with the rationale that led to these requirements are included as are the coil pack stresses.
