A test facility for 200 kA SMES/ETM conductors

The Texas Accelerator Center has successfully constructed and operated a test facility to measure the performance of 200 kA superconductors in Helium II. The measurements required transport currents up to 300 kA, background magnetic fields up to 5T, and helium bath temperatures down to 1.8 K. Of primary interest were measurements of critical current, stability margin, and performance degradation due to load cycling. Resistivity measurements and conductor performance during fast ramps were also of interest. This paper describes the test facility and the procedures used to characterize two full-scale copper-stabilized cable-in-conduit superconductors furnished by General Dynamics, a member of the Bechtel SMES project team.
