A hybrid photovoltaic-solar thermal domestic hot water heater system is studied. The system uses the conventional flat plate solar-thermal collector to capture the sun's thermal energy and photovoltaics (direct conversion of sunlight to electricity) to energize the circulating pump. The primary objective of this study is to replace the conventional 110Vac source which drives the circulating pump with a photovoltaic power supply, while maintaining good reliability at minimum expense. Performance of the hybrid system defined herein is equal to or better than that of the 110Vac powered system. Such performance has been demonstrated using a March Manufacturing Inc. Model 809 pump with permanent magnet dc motor powered by a Motorola MSP23A20 20 watt photovoltaic module. System optimization techniques are also discussed. In summary, a hybrid photovoltaic-solar thermal system is available today which offers equal or better performance than a conventional 110Vac powered system.
