Study of the 10 cm duopigatron as a source of intermediate and high mass particle beams

The performance of the 10 cm (ORMAK type) duopigatron as a source of intermediate and high mass ion and neutral beams is examined. Studies were conducted with argon, krypton, xenon, helium, and nitrogen as well as hydrogen. Extracted beam currents in the range of 0.5 to 1.0 amperes were obtained at accelerating voltages up to 19 kV. Source plasma instabilities, not observed in hydrogen, were examined for the higher mass gases. Mechanisms to explain the unstable behavior were proposed and tested with Langmuir probe measurements. The dependences of extracted beam current on accelerating potential, ion mass, and source plasma denity were determined and compared with existing theories for space-charge limited, and ion saturation limited extraction. Excellent agreement with these theories was obtained for the noble gases. The approach to the ion saturation regime appears to involve a change in the acceleration gap spacing, consistent with the concept of an emissive meniscus protruding between the acceleration grids. Diagnostic data was obtained from Langmuir probes, optical spectroscopy, magnetic spectrometry, particle detectors, and calorimetry.
