In an era of renewed public opposition to nuclear weapons among Americans and Western Europeans, NATO feels it must make a concerted effort to present the facts concerning the Alliance deterrence strategy and disarmament proposals to maintain its stance of being an advocate of peace. NATO members are supportive of a defensive policy that ensures the deterrence of aggression and a negotiated reduction in the levels of armaments for both the United States and the Soviet Union.
