Light your runways and taxiways without electricity

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5688900
Lights using krypton 85 were fabricated and tested as airfield-threshold markers, runway edge markers, and taxiway markers. Efforts were then turned to tritium, and the ORNL program was directed toward improvement in light output and light source design. Acquisition distances of over 4 miles were achieved by a combination of tube design, phosphor and coating techniques, quality assurance, and new tritium loading techniques. Field tests have been conducted, a rigorous safety testing and quality control program has been instituted. The dose received when light fixture breaks is analyzed. A cost breakdown is made. (DLC)
