Conservation decision-making: a rationalization

Journal Article · · Nat. Resour. J.; (United States)

Conservation is the conscious exercise of good taste in the use of resources. It is necessary because individuals have differences in such taste, and because the economic, social, and political institutions cannot always effectively respond to such complex and often conflicting preferences. Conservation requirements do not always seem significant, but in the aggregate, they represent many millions of dollars in the way we use our natural resources. These effects have further multiple reactions throughout the economy and society. Like education, conservation is obliged to pass along resource potential to those in the future, while trying to raise that potential through research in conservation values, technology, organization, and decision-making.
