Foreign power systems: electric energy in the UK

Journal Article · · Electr. Light Power; (United States)
OSTI ID:5684609

Electric power generation in the United Kingdom will differ from that in the US by relying on nuclear power for new capacity and extending the lives of coal-fired plants from 30 to 40 years. New reactors will be pressurized water types (PWR), but the door will not be closed on the advance gas-cooled reactor (AGR) program. Economic restrictions will limit the use of renewable resources, and programs for coal liquefaction and gasification will be slowed and limited to exports. The review expands on these developments and the organization of the Central Electricity Generating Board. The emphasis on nuclear power reflects UK confidence that radioactive wastes are manageable and environmental problems are not major. (DCK)
