The X-ray crystal structure of (Pt/sub 2/(..mu..-dppm)/sub 2/Cl(PPh/sub 3/))/sup +/(PF/sub 6//sup -/) indicates considerable tetrahedral distortion of the normally square-planar environment around its PPh/sub 3/-ligated platinum. These distortions relieve repulsions between phenyl groups on PPh/sub 3/ and those on the adjacent dppm ligand but cause a significant retardation of the rates of axial/equatorial interchange of substituents on the Pt/sub 2/(..mu..-dppm)/sub 2/ ring as observed by /sup 1/H NMR spectroscopy. The /sup 31/P NMR spectra of this and related complexes are also consistent with these data.
