Adhesion of PVD titanium coatings to beryllium substrates. [Physical vapor deposition]

Influencing the adhesive mechanism is the surface condition of the substrate. Along with deposition variables, as substrate temperature, vacuum pressure and coating rate, a mechanical interlocking model of adhesion is proposed. An approximation of the adhesive failure stress is presented based on classical fracture mechanic principles. Incorporated into the model, is an x-ray diffraction texture characterization of the coating microstructure that is shown to vary with the deposition parameters. Experimental stresses to induce bond failure, in an adherence pull test, are compared with those values predicted by the model (which considers a state of plane strain at the coating-substrate interface). 37 refs., 9 figs., 8 tabs.
