Carbon/oxygen well logging method and apparatus

This patent describes a method for determining the hydrocarbon saturation S{sub 0} of an earth formation surrounding a borehole. It comprises emitting fast neutrons into the formation from a neutron source in the borehole, detecting gamma rays resulting from the interaction between the neutrons and materials from the borehole and the formation; forming gamma ray spectrum signals from the gamma rays and deriving from the signals the carbon yield and oxygen yield; expressing the carbon yield as a first linear function of S{sub 0} and of C{sub b}; and deriving S{sub 0} from the first and second linear functions.
