A wire rope is a flexible cable consisting of a plurality of strands laid together helically, and symmetrically arranged with a uniform pitch around a core of wires or fibrous material. This construction provides warning of the eventual approach of failure in service by the progressive development of broken wires which can easily be detected by inspection. Characteristics of wire rope are discussed, and illustrations of various modes of service failure of wire rope in industrial use and in aircraft control cables are shown.
