Introducing personal workstations to enhance professional productivity
Most companies are now in the throes of setting near-term strategies to introduce electronic aids at the desks of their professional workers. These aids may include a wide range of devices from stand alone personal computers to the multifunctional networked ''professional'' workstations now coming to market. These workstations may differ also based on where individual intelligence resides, on the desk or remotely in a larger computing facility. The objective is always to improve staff productivity, a somewhat elusive goal to accurately define and measure. Complicating this effort are the separate disciplines and established procedures of a number of organizations -- MIS, office support, engineering and analytical -- which form the environment in which this all must take place. This paper discusses the dynamics of how the Standard Oil Company of California is facing these issues from both an organizational and technological perspective. Specifically, the authors describe an interdivisional task force effort to research and define an appropriate corporate role for personal computers.
