The phase stability for the Al-C-N-O system have been calculated and analyzed based on available thermodynamic data. In the Al-C-N system, aluminum nitride can be easily produced by infusing nitrogen gas through aluminum carbide at lower temperature. Meanwhile carbide is fabricated by carbothermic reduction from alumina in a temperature higher than 2267 K. In the Al-C-O system, the alumina could be reduced into aluminum metal by aluminum carbide at 2365 K. In the Al-N-O system, aluminum nitride might be obtained from the nitridation of alumina by directly introducing the ultra pure nitrogen gas in which the oxygen pressure has to be less than log pO{sub 2} = -35,231 / T + 3,244. Finally, in the Al-C-N-O system, the optimum condition for carbothermic reduction and simultaneous nitridation of alumina and the aluminum nitride could be successfully achieved at 1961 K.
