A diffuse-interface model is proposed for studying the kinetics of microstructural evolution in multiphase systems. In this model, an arbitrary multiphase microstructure is described by field variables which take different values in different phases and within different grains, and are continuous across the interphase boundaries and grain boundaries. The kinetics of microstructural evolution is described by the temporal evolution of these field variables obtained through a numerical simulation of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations. Preliminary results on the microstructures and their evolution in a two-phase solid and solid-liquid two-phase mixtures will be presented.
