Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) have been fabricated by a variety of processes. Microstructural effects on composite properties remain relatively unexplored. Our recent efforts have focused on slight variations in the sedimentation process used to produce alumina-NiAl FGMs. These produced slight changes in thermomechanical response. Zirconia-NiAl FGMs were also fabricated and displayed a marked tetragonal phase instability.
