Restrictions on the mechanism of dynamical symmetry breaking in gauge theories which follow from the equations for the Green's functions are investigated. For vectorlike asymptotically free theories such as QCD, the ultraviolet asymptotic behavior of the dynamical mass function of the fermion is uniquely determined directly from these equations, and it is shown that the dynamics of the symmetry breaking can be formed only in the region in which the running coupling constant exceeds a certain critical value ..cap alpha../sub c/not =0. A solution of the Goldstein problem is proposed in the case of quantum electrodynamics. The structure of the phase diagram with respect to the coupling constant in QED is discussed.
