An All-Union scientific-technical meeting of blastfurnacemen was held in Dnepropetrovsk on 13-15 September 1977 to discuss the subject of improving the effectiveness of blast furnace plants. The arrangements were made by the Soviet Iron and Steel Ministry, the Central Committee of the iron and steel trades union and the Central Board of NTO Chermet. In view of the extreme importance of the subject under discussion, the Ministry invited not only the leading experts in the blast-furnace plants but also representatives from a number of mining and coal-cleaning undertakings and the coking industry. Various statistics of the USSR's production of pig iron in blast furnaces are given. Large new blast furnaces (500 m/sup 3/) are being commissioned in at least two places. In order to reduce coke consumption in the blast furnaces heated coal gas at heated natural gas are injected. The requirements or coke for their large blast furnaces are rather strict with respect to strength and uniformity of lump size. There were some complaints about the failure to ensure supplies of top-quality coke. (LTN)
