Voltage instability and voltage collapse are a frequent concern on heavily stressed power systems. They are typically analyzed with a variety of tools based on power-flow solutions. Although these techniques have served the industry well, there is a growing need to understand voltage phenomena beyond the information provided by steady-state analysis tools. Time simulations are ideally suited to provide insight into the mechanics of voltage instability and voltage collapse. This article illustrates fast and slow dynamic performance with two examples using actual utility systems. These examples were chosen to characterize a local reactive shortage and radial system performance, respectively. In both cases, a critical disturbance is examined. These disturbances result in a load flow that cannot be solved. Studies were performed with the Extended Term Dynamics module in PTI's Power System Simulation (PSS/E) program.
