Current advances in the computer industry and changes in the electric utility business environment will shift the focus in the development of Energy Management Systems (EMS) to the software engineering and integration aspects of these systems. The emphasis on how these systems are engineered to protect a utility's investment in an EMS will increase. The move is, therefore, to open systems. This affects all aspects of power system control center design. This paper focuses on the User Interface subsystem of an EMS. The paper discusses the evolution of the user interface for and EMS including current solutions and technologies that are being applied. The discussion is then extended to areas of issues that will need to be addressed as the design of the user interface subsystem is evolved to incorporate open systems concepts and standards. Specific areas that are discussed include graphical user interface (GUI) styles, user interface management systems (UIMS) and three dimensional graphics.
