Process for the catalytic synthesis of hydrocarbons, particularly of methane, from hydrogen and carbon monoxide
Patent

OSTI ID:5676638
Water flowing along with the reactant gases through the catalyst bed acts as a coolant in this unique methanation process, removing most of the reaction heat as sensible heat and keeping the bed temperature within 390/sup 0/-610/sup 0/F. Carbon monoxide and hydrogen flow with the water down through a fixed bed of ruthenium catalyst. The resulting aqueous stream is cooled in a heat exchanger before recycling. The flow rate is such that the catalyst bed is essentially immersed in the water at all times.
