Energy management in supermarkets: refrigeration retrofit cuts electricity bills 50%

Retrofitting a more energy-efficient compressor system at two of its supermarkets enabled Warehouse Markets to reduce electricity consumption by 50% and lower maintenance costs with a longer service life. The company expects a 2.5-year payback from the retrofits, which replaced four compressors with 12 smaller units that are sized to optimize energy consumption by cycling the appropriate number of compressors to match fluctuating cooling loads. The project is a departure from the industry's custom of replacing refrigeration equipment in conjunction with remodeling. An energy management system at one of the stores signals a drop in refrigerant, which can save as much as $10,000 a year.
