Thermoprogrammed reduction (TPR) has been used to investigate the reduction and post-reduction of passivated samples of nickel-oxide and nickel-copper-oxide systems, applied to SiO/sub 2/. It has been demonstrated that in the oxide systems the applied phases react differently with the support, whereby the surface and bulk Ni hydrosilicates are most difficult to reduce. The introduction of Cu has no effect on the reduction of these compounds. The formation of nickel-oxygen structures in the case of mild passivation is accompanied by a decrease in the reduction temperature. A promoting influence of Cu is observed in the reduction of nickel-copper-oxide phases that react weakly with the support.
