The National Air Pollution Surveillance Program is a joint project of the federal and provincial levels of government to monitor and assess, on a continuing basis, the quality of the ambient air in the urban regions of Canada. This annual summary presents data reported from 405 sampling instruments in 54 cities across the 10 provinces and the 2 territories. Measurements were made for sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, soiling index, suspended particulates, lead, dustfall and sulphation rate. The summary also compares the 1989 data with national air quality objectives for sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and suspended particulates.
