Luminescence of a monofluoride complex of uranyl in solution
The photoluminescence spectra of uranyl ions were recorded in the presence of variation of the fluoride ion concentration up to (F/sup -/) = 3 x 10/sup -4/ M in a solution of 0.1 M HClO/sub 4/ at the temperature t = 25/sup 0/C. Complex formation according to the reaction (UO/sub 2//sup 2 +/)/sub aqua/ + F/sup -/ in equilibrium (UO/sub 2/F/sup +/) leads to a shift of the maxima and a broadening of the bands of the luminescence spectrum in solution. It was shown that, as a result of the slow ligand exchange, when the rate of deactivation of electronically excited states exceeds the rate of ligand exchange between (UO/sub 2//sup 2 +/)/sub aqua/ and (UO/sub 2/F/sup +/), the summary spectrum of steady-state luminescence of a solution of uranyl ions in the presence of fluoride ions can be broken down into components corresponding to the spectra of the individual complexes. The luminescence spectrum of the monofluoride complex of uranyl in solution was obtained. It was found that the luminescence spectrum of (UO/sub 2/F/sup +/) obtained is unchanged when the (F/sup -/) concentration is varied from 1 to 3 x 10/sup -4/ M. It was shown that in the region of the investigated composition of the solution, at a low intensity of the exciting light the presence of electronically excited uranyl ions has no effect on the ratio of the concentrations of aqua- and monofluoride complexes of UO/sub 2//sup 2 +/ in solution. Therefore, the concentration of the latter was calculated according to the known stability constant of the monofluoride complex of uranyl in the ground state in resolving the spectra into components.
