Various architectures of fibrous monolithic ceramics were fabricated in the Si{sub 3}N{sub 4}/BN system consisting of uniaxially aligned polycrystalline cells of Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} separated by cell boundaries of BN. Room temperature flexural properties of several Si{sub 3}N{sub 4}/BN fibrous monoliths and a novel three layer Si{sub 3}N{sub 4}/BN/Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} fibrous monolith were investigated. A comparison was also made between the high temperature flexural properties of a Si{sub 3}N{sub 4}/BN fibrous monolith and a new material in which Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} cells were alloyed with SiC.
