With high wear resistance and chemical inertness, ceramics are ideal materials for mechanical seals under the most severe environmental conditions of lubricant starvation, high pressure and temperature. On the negative side, relatively high friction coefficients in dry sliding, low strength, insulating properties, and the relatively high cost of diamond grinding have prevented more wide spread use of ceramic materials in bearing seal applications. A number of different self lubricating ceramic composites have being developed with graphite as the solid state lubricant phase. Some methods are based on depositing lubricious surface films, others on surface modification treatments like Ion Beam-Assisted Deposition, and yet others are based on lubricant reservoirs. Alumina-graphite composites have recently been fabricated by a number of powder processing routes to achieve a strong sintered bonded material. Graphite flake composites have been processed by both tape casting and filter pressing, with both fine and coarse grades of graphite flake, and by both pressureless sintering and hot pressing. Processing and mechanical properties are reported in an early publication.
