Molybdenum cluster chalcogenides Mo/sub 6/X/sub 8/: electrochemical intercalation of closed shell ions Zn/sup 2 +/, Cd/sup 2 +/, and Na/sup +/

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem.; (United States)
The intercalation of d/sup 10/ ions and Zn/sup 2 +/ and Cd/sup 2 +/ by electron/ion transfer reactions into the Chevrel-type molybdenum cluster chalcogenides Mo/sub 6/X/sub 8/ (X = S, Se) demonstrates the competitive influence of electronic and steric factors upon these processes. The following rhombohedral phases have been identified: Zn/sub 1/Mo/sub 6/S/sub 8/, Zn/sub 2/Mo/sub 6/S/sub 8/, Zn/sub 1/Mo/sub 6/Se/sub 8/, Zn/sub 2/Mo/sub 6/Se/sub 8/, Cd/sub 1/Mo/sub 6/S/sub 8/, Cd/sub 1/Mo/sub 6/Se/sub 8/, and Cd/sub 2/Mo/sub 6/Se/sub 8/. Thermodynamic data and chemical diffusion coefficients are given. The intercalation of Na/sup +/, which has an ionic radius close to that of Cd/sup 2 +/, exhibits a strong influence of kinetics leading to the partial irreversibility of the reaction and the formation Na/sub 1/Mo/sub 6/S/sub 8/ and Na/sub 1/Mo/sub 6/Se/sub 8/, the first cubic phases among the molybdenum cluster chalcogenides A/sub x/Mo/sub 6/X/sub 8/.
