The main facts concerning the dependence of superconductivity on rare-earth ion R in the homologues of RBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 2}NbO{sub 8}, RBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7}, RBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 4}O{sub 8}, R{sub 2{minus}z}Ce{sub z}CuO{sub 4}, and R{sub 2{minus}z}Ce{sub z}Sr{sub 2}Cu{sub 2}NbO{sub 10} are organized using the principles that the supercurrent is where the holes are and the superconducting condensate is beyond the pair-breaking range of active rare-earth magnetic moments. Experiments to test this organization are proposed. {copyright} {ital 1998 American Institute of Physics.}
