Traffic in urban areas is a continuing problem for which there is no permanent one-time treatment. The physical makeup of cities and the high costs of this makeup make changes difficult, expensive, and slow. Ways in which urban transportation systems can be planned and developed are discussed. The public-private transport mix is considered. Modern transportation plans, including diverting travel patterns from automobiles to mass transit, are assessed. Multi-modal urban transportation planning is assessed.
