This report summarizes the progress of the Solvent Refined Coal (SRC) project by The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Co. for the Department of Energy for the period July 1, 1978 through September 30, 1978. Major activities at the Fort Lewis Pilot Plant included SRC I operation and the test operation of a new type of rotary drum filter, Filter C. A period of SRC II operation using a Pittsburgh seam coal from the Powhatan No. 5 mine was initiated. Merriam Laboratory activities included testing of novel reactors and very short residence times and a study of solvent behavior at SRC II reaction conditions. The Process Development Unit P-99 at Harmarville tested a series of Pittsburgh seam coals in the SRC II process to study both feedstock effects and process variable effects.
