Practical seismic interpretation

Book ·
OSTI ID:5669389
This book offers a presentation of the practical aspects of reflection seismic interpretation, written by a working explorationist for explorationists. Focusing on the everyday problems facing the working interpreter, this book has a geological emphasis and is aimed especially to those new to interpretation. Contents include: 1. Introduction--data acquisition, processing, interpretation equipment. 2. Essential theory--the nature of reflections, resolution, interference, vertical resolution, horizontal resolution, the effect of depth. 3. The real world--noise, velocity distortions; 4. Geology and seismic-the individual reflection, lithological change and reflections, seismic stratigraphy, recognizing lithology, reflections associated with hydrocarbon and diagenetic effects; 5. Structural features--folds and flexures, faults, structural analysis; 6. Data preparation and preliminary studies--shot point maps, types of seismic sections, the section label, previous surveys, velocity data, well data, synthetic seismograms, vertical seismic profiles, seismic refraction, magnetic methods, gravity methods, photogeology and satellite imagery; 7. The interpretation--making a start, initial geological review, well-to-seismic tie, horizon selection, section folding, picking, loop tying, common problems; 8. Contouring and mapping--mechanical, manual, map migration; 9. Questions and answers; References; and Index.
