Title: Systematic study of the helium-3 elastic and the (He-3, alpha) transfer reaction at 132 MeV on /sup 12/C, /sup 16/O, /sup 40/Ca, /sup 58/Ni, and /sup 90/Zr

/sup 12/C, /sup 16/O, /sup 40/Ca, /sup 58/Ni, and /sup 90/Zr, were bombarded by 132 MeV /sup 3/He ions at the University of Maryland Isochronous Cyclotron, and /sup 3/He and /sup 4/He spectra were obtained for lab angles from 5/sup 0/ to 50-60/sup 0/ with resolution in two detector arms of 250 KeV and 400 KeV. Elastic scattering angular distributions are used in the optical model search code, JIB III, to infer optical model parameters. The full sets of data yield shallow potentials, while data sets truncated at the rainbow angle lead to a family of deep potentials. The volume integrals, J/3A, indicate that the yield for helion elastic scattering comes preferentially from the nuclear periphery. For the (/sup 3/He, ..cap alpha..) reaction calculations are carried out using the exact finite range DWBA transfer code, MARY. Using both the shallow and deep OMP from our data for /sup 3/He, and those for 140 MeV /sup 4/He inferred from previous work at the UM Cyclotron Laboratory, we compare the results of calculations with transfer data. It is found that they are reproduced only with the combination of the shallow /sup 3/He potential in the entrance channel and the deep /sup 4/He potential in the exit channel. Fits are excellent, and the extracted spectroscopic factors agree well with theory.
