Determination of the properties of a jointed oil shale. [Density; permeability; Brazilian tests; triaxial tests; jointed tests]

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5667656
The as-received density and permeability to water and argon were determined for oil shale samples. The main effort was directed to determine properties of competent and jointed samples. Brazilian tests were performed to determine the tensile strength. Triaxial compression tests to calculate the elastic properties and determine the compressive strength were also conducted. Jointed triaxial tests and direct shear tests were performed to determine the joint properties shear stiffness, normal stiffness and cofficient of friction. Results of the Brazilian tests showed an increase in tensile strength of about 40% for the direction parallel to the bedding planes compared to the perpendicular. The compressive strength was higher in the perpendicular direction and increased along with the elastic properties with confining pressure. The joint properties data from the different test methods showed good correlation. Shear stiffnesses of about 100,000 psi/in, normal stiffnesses of about 400,000 psi/in and coefficients of friction of about 0.6 are reported. 92 figures, 12 tables.
