An incompetent underground formation is impregnated with a resin-forming material which includes furfuryl alcohol and may include materials that form copolymers with furfuryl alcohol. A hot inert gas is displaced through the impregnated formation to cause reaction of the resin-forming material to form a resin permeably bonding together the particles of the formation. A process is described in which the incompetent sands are first cleaned by in situ combustion, cooled to below 200/sup 0/F, impregnated with resin-forming material, and the hot inert gas passed through the impregnated formation.
