Terrestrial bryophytes as indicators of air quality in southeastern Ohio and adjacent West Virginia

Journal Article · · Ohio J. Sci.; (United States)

Described is an Ohio State Univ. study that examined the usefulness of using terrestrial bryophytes as indicators of air quality. Phytosociological and/or species differences among bryophyte communities of similar habitats at various distances from three coal-fired power plants and a ferralloy plant along the Ohio River were determined. The number of bryophyte communities was shown to increase as the distances from the plants increased. Presence or absence of indicator moss species proved to be useful for measuring relative air quality. (4 maps, 25 references, 3 tables)
