The progress made on two major tasks in Phase III is summarized: material selection, fabrication and testing of MK-III bits; and seal and lubricant evaluation. Candidate steel and carbide properties were evaluated in laboratory tests before final selections were made for the MK-III bit. The sealed bit program covers extensive testing of conventional elastomeric seals, experimental elastomeric seals, and experimental heterogeneous seals, as well as lubricant tests using a specially constructed test machine.
