QCD sum rules and the static properties of the 1/2/sup +/ baryon octet

The author motivate the need for an analytical approach to calculating static properties of baryons that is firmly based on the underlying theory of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics. We give a quantum mechanical example that illustrates the approach while introducing many of the methods to be applied. The sum rules are then used to calculate the masses and magnetic moments of the 1/2/sup +/ baryon octet in terms of phenomenological QCD parameters of the underlying theory. In the appendices we give the Fourier and Borel transforms used in this work as well as derive the perturbative and non-perturbative terms that are used in calculating the Wilson coefficients in the operator product expansion of the sum rules.
