Bituminous sands: economic stripping ratio and mining systems

Conference · · Int. SME of AIME Fall Mtg; ()
OSTI ID:5661044
As in other mineral deposits, variation in bitumen saturation, thickness of ore, and discard occurs throughout Alberta's Athabasca Oil Sands deposit. The economic stripping ratio was developed to determine surface mineable limits. The ratio takes into account capital and operating costs, crude oil prices, quality of ore, thickness of overburden, and thickness of inter-ore waste. The surface mining systems employed to remove bituminous sands (oil sands) from huge mines at depths of 60 to 70 m use gigantic draglines, bucket wheel excavators and reclaimers, and large mobile equipment. 10 references.
