In the system Sm/sub 1-chi/Lu/sub chi/Ba/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ single phase orthorhombic perovskite is formed for chi{le}0.5 above which a multiphase material is obtained with the predominant 123 phase. All the phases except when chi = 1.0, exhibit superconductivity with T/sub c,zero/ in the range 87-90 {Kappa}. Pure LaBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ is tetragonal and shows a T/sub c,zero/ of 73 {Kappa}. Orthorhombic distortion and a T/sub c,zero/ of 79 {Kappa} can be induced for chi = 0.1 in La/sub 1-chi/Lu/sub chi/Ba/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/. In the latter system, single phase materials are obtained for chi{le}0.5 However, all phases exhibit superconductivity with T/sub c,zero/ = 90 +- 2 {Kappa} for 0.2{le}chi{le}0.8.
