Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5657980
Electric generating plants with a total combined capacity of 25 megawatts or greater purchased fossil fuels equivalent to 1.46 quadrillion Btu's in December, 98.5% of which was for steam-electric generation. Measured by their total heat content fossil fuel purchases for steam-electric generation were down 7.3% from last month and up 38.5% from December 1977. Deliveries of coal totaled 43.8 million tons, an increase of 18.5 million tons above shipments made during December 1977. Oil purchases for steam-electric generation reached 45.5 million barrels this month, a decrease of 3.8 million barrels below shipments made in December of last year. Gas deliveries to steam-electric units totaled 211.2 billion ft/sup 3/ (Bcf), up 6.6 Bcf from last year's level. In December, the price of coal averaged 115.9 cents per million Btu, a rise of 8.5% over the average price of a year ago. The average price of all oil delivered to steam plants was 228.7 cents per million Btu, a rise of 5% compared to December 1977. Steam gas purchases averaged 139.3 cents per million Btu, an increase of 6.7% over the December 1977 level.
