How electric utility rates affect the value of inside-the-fence'' cogeneration

The value of cogenerated power will depend on the disposition of that power and the design of the electric utility rates. For those applications where the power is used on-site displacing power purchased from the utility, the design considerations include the relative demand and energy costs, time-of-day considerations, demand ratchets and partial service rates. For projects selling cogenerated power to the utility the rate considerations include capacity credits, energy credits and seasonal variations in these credits. The determination of the value of cogenerated power under different conditions is shown in the following examples.
