X-ray emission spectra obtained using energy-selective synchrotron-radiation excitation for small molecules such as CO, N{sub 2}, and CO{sub 2} are shown. The spectra illustrate how the intensities are governed by the dipole selection rules associated with the absorption-emission process. It is shown, in particular, how the spectra can provide symmetry information of both occupied and unoccupied valence orbitals. The importance of the vibrational motion of the molecules is also stressed. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
