Plasma-Arc Cutting Equipment for TMI-2 Defueling
An engineering effort is currently under way at Three Mile Island Unit 2 (TMI-2) to provide equipment to defuel the region of the reactor vessel below the core. This area is a stainless-steel structure called the lower core support assembly (LCSA). As one of several options, the plasma-arc cutting process has been selected to section the LCSA to provide large openings for debris removal from this region. Plasma arc is the only technique considered to be capable of cutting the LCSA in a reasonable time. Remote, underwater plasma cutting has been used previously for decommissioning and for modifications at operating reactors, such as St. Lucie. Cutting tests at a depth of 10.7 m (35 ft) on 5-cm (2-in.)-thick stainless steel established the feasibility of the TMI-2 application.
