Solid wastes as a fuel in the cement industry in the UK

Journal Article · · Energy Prog.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5653375

About 21 million tons of municipal solid wastes are collected for disposal in the UK each year and this material has on average a calorific value about one third that of good quality coal. Over 85% still ends up in sanitary landfills so that something like six million tons of coal equivalent are going into landfills every year. The incineration of municipal wastes, being used successfully to supply process heat for cement making, is discussed.
