Preliminary results from the laboratory-scale wet carbonization of Minnesota, North Carolina, and Maine peats in a batch autoclave were very encouraging. Dewatering proved to raise the peat's heating value by as much as 33%. Researchers plan to study the effects of temperature, pressure, and residence time on the dewaterability and carbonization characteristics of various peats.
