Well perforating apparatus

This paper describes a perforating apparatus. It comprises: a perforating gun body; p, explosive charges, where p is an odd whole number greater than 4; and carrier means, disposed in the perforating gun, for carrying the p explosive charges to that a majority of the p explosive charges are disposed on no more than half of the perforating apparatus thereby permitting directional firing thereof, the carrier means including a longitudinal section of length h in which the p explosive charges are retained so that the p explosive charges define multiple spirals about the section within the length h wherein at most one of the p explosive charges is bisected by any one transverse plane of the section and further wherein none of the p explosive charges is longitudinally aligned with any other of the p explosive charges.
