Providing heavy-duty engine-driven mobile air and gas compression equipment on a rental basis to the oil, gas, and process industry is a vigorous industry in itself. One operation that has been highly successful and specifically organized for rental services is I-R Compression Services, a division of Ingersoll-Rand Co. Currently, the I-RCS rental fleet consists of 78 units totaling 57,000 continuous horsepower. The advisability of renting machinery is based on the concept that profits are realized through the use of equipment, not through unnecessary ownership. During the lease, money that would otherwise have been spent to buy the equipment still is available to earn additional profits in other areas. Renting thus conserves capital; it also extends a company's total borrowing capacity, minimizes the risk of obsolescence, and acts as a hedge against inflation. I-RCS rents (with a purchase option, if desired) mobile compressor units up to 100 hp for (1) gas compression, (2) air drilling and (3) air power. The advantages of these services are many and the service is unique in its scope and equipment size. Some of the applications include a chemical plant in Indiana; high pressure area to test production apparatus in Tennessee; and fire-flood in California.
