Trace elements in coal and coke ash by atomic absorption

Journal Article · · Annu. Book ASTM Stand.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5651225
The determination of Be, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn in coal ash or coke ash by atomic absorption is described. A representative air-dried whole coal or coke sample ground to pass a 150-..mu..m sieve is ashed to a constant weight to determine the percent ash in the sample. The ash is dissolved in a mixture of aqua regia and HF, and boric acid is added to the solution. A nitrous oxide/acetylene flame is used for the determination of Be, Cr, and V in this solution, while an air/acetylene flame is used for the determination of Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The range of concentrations for each element's determination and the precision and accuracy of the method are tabulated.
