Energy conservation: strategic planning a necessity

Many of the largest companies continue to feel uneasy about the scope and effectiveness of their energy-conservation programs, making this an appropriate time to re-examine and improve the energy-management function. Fuel-supply reliability and the need to control energy costs are of major concern to these companies. Arthur D. Little's critical steps for strategic planning - (1) set realistic short- and long-term goals, (2) evaluate alternatives and tradeoffs, (3) develop an action plan, (4) motivate participation and support, and (5) monitor results - are described in this context. Energy managers can strengthen the performance of their programs by adopting these planning techniques. (DCK)
